about

this guy i know named Johnny Pay gave me a newspaper clipping about the story of Willard McDonald. 12 years later i was browsing through my songbook when i came across the lyrics i had jotted down. i had written a song but i couldn't remember the melody or the chord changes. it's the most frustrating thing in the world. not remembering a song. i was pissed! so i went down to hurricanes and had several pints. when i came back i picked up the guitar and the goosebumps hardened on my arms. i was relaxed and had a sense of wonder. a simple chord progression..................and...... bingo! it came quick and easy like all good things in life do. i battled through it with ease. there were tears as i silently mumbled congratulatory thoughts to myself. i was drunk and ready rage. just like Willard would have!!!!!

lyrics

i heard from someone just the other day
that Willard McDonald had passed away
i was remembering the loud sound
of his makeshift guitar
Willard McDonald he lived off the land
he had the best laugh of any man
he had me over once for some berries and rabbit
let me tell you all about it.

Willard McDonald you are dead
your ashes have been spread all around
and if i listen closely now to the autumn breeze
yes, i can still hear your sound
yes, i can still hear your sound

makeshift that shit on guitar for us Willard

makeshift it

sitting at the table of his pine needle shack
i looked up to his face
and i noticed that his eyes were wiser then mine
and from his mouth came stories and song

Willard McDonald you are dead
your ashes have been spread all around
and if i listen closely now to the autumn breeze
yes, i can still hear your sound
yes, i can still hear your sound

makeshift that shit on guitar for us Willard

makeshift it
